Trip to Vuonxoai

Lots of firsts for me today: Bike riding and Ostrich riding.

My friends had plans to drive up to a nearby resort with their students to go grass skiing and ostrich riding and I got to tag along. We met their students at what I assumed was the outskirts of the city and doubled up on their motorbikes to the resort that was an hour away.

One more reason why Vietnam looks like home

On the way to the resort, we passed by one more reason for me to say that Vietnam is much like home.

And then another reason. This scene looked a lot to me like the road back to Imbatug where my mom grew up.

My experiences with the cab drivers

I’m on my way to Vietnam today so I took a cab to the airport and I almost gave my driver an 85 dollar tip. :| I swear, the 10 & 100 dollar bills here look too similar, or maybe i was just too sleepy to notice. Luckily, the cab driver was an honest guy and he honked at me as I was about to enter the airport. He called me over and gave me back my 100 bucks. The dude was indeed an honest man, and I find there are a lot of them here in this country.

Yesterday on the other hand was an interesting experience. At some point on my journey to work, I was spacing out the window when all of a sudden, some dude in a black car drove up beside the cab and started flailing his middle finger at my driver. My driver’s response was blocked from my view by the headrest of the front passenger seat.

Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Supports Solutions!

image

With the goal of stressing out my new adopted baby, Brownie (yes I know it makes her sound like a dog but hey, what can I do, it’s brown and I wasn’t feeling very creative when I got her), I installed Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, because I figured that one day while sitting at a cafe, I would probably have the urge to code and will need to have some form of VS on this little one. (I’m already thinking about how I can possible expand this girl’s memory just a little bit). I was pleasantly surprised, when I started creating a new Silverlight project, to see that it actually now supported solutions! I remember before, that was probably the most evident limitation of the express editions from the non-free ones (:p). I also tried out opening a solution that was built through the Pro edition and it seemed to work fine too! I think this is great news for all the hobbyist developers out there who would just like to try their hand out or start learning how to build all sorts of cool .NET applications. What I’d really love to see though is allowing Express Editions build for WinMo hrmmm..

I survived the weekend without my phone.

And I thought I was super dependent on technology. Amazingly, I didn’t lose my mind, although, part of it is probably because half my weekend was spent writhing in pain last Saturday. But I went out yesterday. On several instances I reached into my bag with the intent to pull out my phone and tweet about something. I kept forgetting I didn’t have my phone with me. Pretty soon, I had gotten used to the idea of not having a phone. And when I reached into my bag, instead I pulled out my little black notebook where i write/ramble when I am bored. I read the stuff that I wrote in it previously and was quite amused. I guess despite my love for technology, nothing beats pen and paper. My only problem is that my hands start to hurt after extensive writing, not to mention my handwriting becomes illegible. :)
